Mental age

In everyday talk, a mental age is a light way of saying how young or old someone seems in spirit: the friend who still says yes to every last-minute plan, or the one who has preferred a quiet night in for as long as anyone can remember. MindScale's five profiles each pair a way of living with a rough age, from about 20 for the Young spirit to 60 and over for the Old soul.

It's a light personality quiz. It doesn't measure maturity, intelligence or development, and the age question at the end never changes the result. No profile is better than another, and many people see something of themselves in more than one.

Take the test

Young spirit

A mental age of about 20: playful, spontaneous and hungry for new things.

The Young spirit is strong in people here. They love fun, surprises and trying things for the first time.
Around the middle
People here have a playful side that comes out now and then, next to a more settled one.
Toward the low end
Spontaneous fun is not what drives people here most. They may prefer to know what's coming.

Go-getter

A mental age of about 30: ambitious, busy and building the life you want.

Toward the high end
The Go-getter is strong in people here. They set goals, work hard and like to see progress.
Around the middle
People here have ambitions and work toward them, without letting them run their lives.
Toward the low end
Climbing and building are not what drive people here most. They may care more about enjoying the life they have.

Steady hand

A mental age of about 40: balanced, practical and the one people rely on.

Toward the high end
The Steady hand is strong in people here. They're practical, reliable and good at keeping things on track.
Around the middle
People here are dependable when it counts, with room for some mess and spontaneity.
Toward the low end
Being the organised, reliable one is not what drives people here most. They may prefer to go with the flow.

Wise guide

A mental age of about 50: patient, thoughtful and full of perspective.

Toward the high end
The Wise guide is strong in people here. They think before they act, and others come to them for advice.
Around the middle
People here offer perspective when it's needed, while still working things out for themselves.
Toward the low end
Giving advice and taking the long view are not what drive people here most. They may prefer to learn by doing.

Old soul

A mental age of 60 and over: reflective, content and fond of simple pleasures.

Toward the high end
The Old soul is strong in people here. They love quiet comforts, old favourites and time to reflect.
Around the middle
People here enjoy simple pleasures and quiet time, next to a taste for new things.
Toward the low end
Quiet nights and old favourites are not what drive people here most. They may find too much calm a little dull.

How scoring works

Each statement has five response choices. A response contributes from 1 to 5 points to the scale it belongs to, and the points become a position from 0 to 100. Around 0–33 is the low third, 34–66 is around the middle and 67–100 is the high third.

For the age profile result, the highest position is the closest match. A scale within 10 points of the highest can also appear as close behind, because a questionnaire cannot turn a mix of traits into one perfect box.

The fun of knowing your mental age

Seeing your closest profile can be a fun way to notice what you enjoy and how you like to spend your time: chasing new experiences, building something, keeping things running, giving advice or enjoying simple pleasures.

It can also be a good conversation starter. Comparing profiles with friends, family or a partner often shows why you'd each pick a different way to spend a weekend off.

Mental age in everyday life

Each profile shows up in small choices: whether you say yes to a last-minute plan, how you set goals, who people call when something needs sorting, and how you like to unwind.

How you feel inside can shift with your season of life, so treat a result as a snapshot of how you see yourself now, not a fixed label.
